Near Death Stories

A child can become entangled in window cords in mere moments. It takes just minutes for a child to strangle to death on these cords, and often, there is no sound, no warning. You may be no more than a few feet from your child and never hear a thing.

There are several ways a child can strangle to death on window cords. Please visit the How "Safe" Cords Kill section to learn about the different dangers of window covering products.

Our research has revealed that a child dies every 2 weeks from strangulation on corded window treatments, the oldest being 12 years of age. This does not include injured children, or pets.

Children that survive this silent killer may not escape unscathed. Besides scarring around the neck, children have lost their eyesight, kidneys and other internal organs. Some even have severe brain damage and require a caregiver for the rest of their lives.

Remove corded window treatments from your home today.

Don't let your child become a statistic.

If you know of someone that has died, or nearly died, due to this silent killer, please Report An Accident/Death.

Lindsey Knerl, writer for parentingsquad.com, experienced the scariest moment a mother could face. I asked some detailed questions about what happened to her then 11 month old baby Moses so that I could get a better understanding on how her son reached the cords, what type of blinds they were, and what kind of strangulation occurred. According to her answer below, Moses wrapped one single tassel around his neck. The new window covering had a "safety kit" attached. Parents for Window Blind Safety recommends only cordless products in all area's of homes with children because even with safety kits attached, children will find a way of accessing the cords.

Moses was actually laying on the couch with his brothers. They were reading some books, and he had pulled himself up to stand against the back of the couch. He must have reached behind the couch to play with the cords, and that is when he seemingly grabbed the main cord (I'm not sure what kind it was, but it had a plastic tassle cover) and put it over his shoulder. Then he must have just rolled over a couple of times, wrapping the cord around and around his neck. When I came in, he had it very tight several times just under his chin. He was standing up and trying to break free from the cord by lunging forward (which put more pressure on his little neck.) It happened very fast, but was a tangled mess. I never held him so tight, and I know that God was watching over him very carefully by having my older son (4 at the time) come get me for help! The blinds themselves were new.
